The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) is a recognised University created in the 1989-1990 academic year and located in the Canary Islands, Spain. Its range of research activities is reflected in its scientific structure, including departments, centers and specific institutes in aquaculture (IUECOAQUA) and telecommunications (IDeTIC, IUMA). IUECOAQUA has relevant infrastructures in aquaculture; as wet labs, has hatchery, nursery and on-growing facilities; as dry labs, has biochemistry, histology, genetics, microscopy, pathology and immunology facilities. IUMA has specialized lab for manufacturing devices in microelectronic and microsystems. IDeTIC has a division in Digital Signal Processing. The involved ULPGC teams hold expertise to carry out scientific research in nutrition, welfare, genetics, microelectronic and microsystems, and data processing.

Role in the AQUAEXCEL3.0 project:

ULPGC offers access to three installations in TNA named as FITU (nutrition), WWSSU (genetics) and MBS (challenges against pathogen or molecules). ULPGS is also involved in data processing of information from devices, experimental developments in essential fatty acids, and will participate in training courses.

Dr. Rafael Ginés Ruiz belongs to the staff of Aquaculture Research Group (GIA) into the IUECOAQUA, as specialist in welfare and meat quality, with wide expertise and relationships with the Spanish aquaculture industry, of marine species like, seabream, seabass, meagre, blackspot seabream or shrimp.

Dr. Juan Manuel Afonso López belongs to the staff of Aquaculture Research Group (GIA) into the IU-ECOAQUA, as specialist in marine genetics (molecular and quantitative genetics), with wide expertise in the characterization and/or appropriate phenotypic definition and harmonization of traits, on fish and crustacea.

Dr. Marisol Izquierdo López belongs to the staff of Aquaculture Research Group (GIA) into the IU-ECOAQUA, as specialist in nutrition and physiology of marine species (seabream, seabass, meagre, seriola, seahorses…). Her expertise has an important influence in aquaculture, with a h-index higher than 60 and more than 200 papers.
