AQUAEXCEL3.0 TNA outcomes presented at “On the Horizon 2” Event

The “On the Horizon” (OTH) events aim to disseminate specific outcomes from EU funded projects that are of potential high relevance for the aquaculture sector. They are framed in the policy framework of the Strategic Guidelines for competitive and sustainable aquaculture in the EU, the Blue Economy, the European Green Deal and Farm 2 Fork Strategies.

The second OTH event took place on May 12th, 2022, organised by EATiP and co-hosted by ERINN Innovation.  Two potential high-impact outputs from the Transnational Access (TNA) program in the framework of the AQUAEXCEL project were presented to an audience of both industry and academic members. Watch both presentations here.

The first speaker was Professor Tao Chen from the University of Surrey (UK). He presented the results from the TNA ADVENTURE project, on computer modelling to assist aquaculture production monitoring, prediction and optimisation. It is expected that aquaculture producers can eventually make use of the tool to continuously monitor various process parameters that will support optimal decision making in relation to feed and water quality control.

The second speaker was PhD student Victor Lobanov from the University of Gothenburg (Sweden). He carried out his TNA AQUAWASTE research at the INRA PEIMA facilities in France, where he explored how to improve plant health through nutrient remineralization in aquaponic systems. His study is the first to assess the capacity of an aquaponics system to target mineral nutrient bioavailability in downstream agriculture through an in-line solids treatment system, and he has already several companies that are interested in implementing the system at their facilities as a pilot.

Three other knowledge outputs from the AQUAPEF, AquaVitae and GAIN projects were presented.

AQUAEXCEL3.0 will continue to organise brokerage events for its potentially high-impact outputs during the lifetime of the project, with the aim of creating a forum for engagement and exchange between researchers and potential beneficiaries of the project’s outputs.
