The University of Stirling (UoS)

The Institute of Aquaculture (IoA) at the University of Stirling (UoS) is a Global Centre of Excellence for Aquaculture and related Aquatic Resource Science, one of the leading institutes worldwide solely focused on research and teaching underpinning aquaculture. The IoA structure includes 5 main research groups which have contributed substantially to technology development especially in the salmonid and tilapia industries and play an important role in providing advice to policy makers at Scottish, UK, EU and International (e.g. FAO) levels. The involved teams hold expertise to carry out scientific research in:

  • Fish behaviour and welfare in relation to physiological, genomic and immunological indictors
  • Fish behaviour and welfare in relation to water flow and other spatially determined culture conditions.

Role in the AQUAEXCEL3.0 project:

UoS will coordinate the TNA programme (WP1) and will be involved inWP4 Tasks 2 and 3 and WP7 Task 3, and in the provision of its research infrastructure for TNA.

Key persons involved:

Dr. Sonia REY PLANELLAS is a lecturer in animmal behaviour and fish welfare. She will lead WP1 on TNA management and contribute to WP6 – Improvement of fish welfare in experiments.

Dr Amaya Albalat is a senior lecturer in the Institute of Aquaculture at University of Stirling and will be the TNA manager for AQUAEXCEL3.0.

Dr Michael Beakert is a senior lecturer in the Institute of Aquaculture at University of Stirling and is the Deput TNA coordinator for AQUAEXCEL3.0
